Kalami
The first time we stayed on Corfu was on a package tour to kalami. The journey from the airport to our apartment remains a memorable experience. If you have blind faith in the driver's skills at negotiating the numerous hairpin bends and avoid gazing at the suicidal antics of other motorists, the views along the coastline can only be described as stunning.
You begin to wonder whether your holiday resort can be that good. Suffice to say Kalami lived up to our expectations .... and more!
Let's declare from the start, if you are looking for a wild raucous resort, forget Kalami. That is not to say that there is no entertainment. However, what entertainment that is available, is confined to the four tavernas and two cocktail bars and three shops for those who self cater. In addition there are a gift shops and a couple of tourist offices where you can exchange currency, book trips or simply seek general information such as bus timetables.
It is an ideal location for a family holiday, with a safe (pebbled) beach for children. For the more energetic, it is an ideal base for walking. The coastal walks are a delight, as are those following the many paths through the olives. One such walk up through the olives will lead you to the main road around the island. From here you can catch a bus to the nearby resort of Kassiopi to the north, or south to Corfu Town. Be warned though, they do get crowded in the summer and the last buses tend to be very early. Always check the timetable!
One other thing about the buses, Greeks have a different idea about queueing to the British! Don't let it fool you though because they will soon let you know if you have pushed in out of turn!
