Agni Bay

Of all the places that we have visited, Agni Bay, in the north-east of the island, is one of our favourites. Tucked away, just south of Kalami, It is one of the most picturesque little bays on the island. We have hesitated to include Agni Bay as we would hate to see it become spoiled. We have been fortunate enought to visit during spring, summer and autumn. Each season is different.

The bay provides excellent safe moorings for those visiting by boat and as a result it  is popular with both the yachting fraternity and those holiday makers that are fortunate enough to discover it. For the inexperienced sailors, help is always on hand if you decide to moor at one of the tavernas in the bay.

Agni Bay, North East Corfu

There are three tavernas situated on the shores of the bay - Taverna Nikolas , Taverna Toula and Taverna Agni. All are different and it is fair to say that all provide excellent food at fair prices.

All three tavernas will arrange for you to be picked up by boat from nearby resorts. Boats will be found running from about 6pm from nearby Kalami Bay until about 9.30pm. A phone call will usually secure a boat to ferry you from nearby Nisaki, should you require it. Don't worry if you eat until late - They will always get you back - somehow! Again, if the seas are deemed unsafe, they will always arrange alternative transport. Oh yes, did we mention that the boat service is provided free of any charge? Mind you a small gratuity for the boatman never goes amiss!

If you want to walk, there is a footpath from Kalami which leads past the famous "White House", up over the cliffs, through the beautiful little bay at Gianiskari and on to Agni Bay. Similarly, it is possible to walk as far south as Kaminaki without straying onto a road. The scenery is stunning, with views of Corfu Town, Albania and mainland Greece. You don't need to be a "mountain goat" or experienced fell walker, but we would not recommend the walk for anybody with walking difficulties. Should you be as foolish as we once were to contemplate walking from Kalami to Agni via the main (only) road - Don't! The distance is very deceptive and the ten minute boat ride, or 25 minute walk through the olive groves develops into a two hour yomp! Think twice if you want to try it in the heat of the day.

Coastguards call for a take-away!

On Sundays, the tavernas are popular with the Greek locals as is the small beach. One of our greatest pleasures is to take a long lunch there on a Sunday, usually from about 12.30pm to 4pm and watch the world sail by!

As will be seen from the image to the right, the bay is very popular with the locals! This shot was taken during late summer, 1999 when the local Coast  Guards dropped into Taverna Nikolas for a take away meal.
